Rediscovering the Essence of Yoga: The Beauty of Beginning Again

In a world consumed by complexity and constant change, there is an inherent value in returning to the basics of any pursuit, be it a skill, a hobby, or even a lifestyle choice. The allure of simplicity is undeniable, offering a path to clarity, mastery, and a profound connection with the foundational principles that often get overshadowed by the noise of advancement.

One significant advantage of getting back to the basics of yoga is the opportunity for a fresh start. When we revisit the fundamentals, we strip away the layers of questions that might have accumulated over time. Going back to basics provides a clean slate, allowing individuals to build a more solid and enduring foundation. Getting back to the basics helps us to fall in love with yoga all over again.

The Basics of Yoga

The basic principles in yoga are known as the 8 Limbs and serve as a compass for our practice. Just as a compass points north, the 8 Limbs provide reliable reference points, helping navigate the twists and turns of advancement.

The 8 Limbs of yoga are a constant, grounding force that fosters consistency and resilience. When I am in doubt about anything in life, I turn to the 8 Limbs to provide me with the knowledge I need to make decisions that are grounded in my highest truth and for my highest good.

The 8 Limbs

In the Yoga Sutras, the ancient authoritative text on yoga, the sage Patanjali defines the 8 Limbs of Yoga that represent the essence of the yoga we practice. It doesn’t matter if you are doing Iyengar, Ashtanga, Hatha, or other forms of yoga. The basics or principles are the same and in the Yoga Sutras they are defined as the following:

Asanas – Postures

Pranayama – Breath mastery

Dhyana – Meditation

Dharana – Focused concentration

Yamas – Restraints; moral disciplines

Niyamas – Positive duties or observances

Pratyahara – Sensory withdrawal

Samadhi – Bliss or enlightenment

Living Intentionally and Mindfully

Turning to the basics of yoga in the form of the 8 Limbs instills a sense of mindfulness and intentionality in life. The basics help to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the intricacies of what we are doing and why we are doing it. This heightened awareness often leads to a more meaningful and gratifying experience not only of our practice but also of life.

Strength of Community

Yoga’s 8 Limbs provide a sense of universality and inclusivity. When everyone understands the fundamental principles, it creates community through shared understanding among practitioners. It creates a space where beginners and experts alike can come together, learn from each other, and contribute to the growth of each other.

One Last Thing Before I Go…

So when life becomes too chaotic, I begin again. I appreciate the opportunity to go back to square one by taking classes or workshops that reinforce the basic principles that characterize yoga. For me, it reinforces that my yoga has shaped me over the years – has helped to define me – and has been my compass when navigating even those situations that seemed impossible.

Namaste, dear one-
